DIETARY FIBRE (ROUGHAGE)

Dietary fibre refers to parts of the food we eat which does not digest i.e are indigestible. They are found in plants food and consist mainly of cellulose (a polysaccharide). Therefore,this undigested food end up in the large intestine (colon) to be removed from the body.

EXAMPLES OF FOOD CONTAINING DIETARY FIBRE.

Fruits: Orange, Mango, Pineapple, Pawpaw, Banana, Apples,Pear etc.

Vegetables: Cabbage, Spinach, Carrots, Lettuce, etc.

Unpolished cereal:Maize,Wheat, Rice,Oats etc.

IMPORTANCE OF DIETARY FIBRE

It prevents constipation and it also prevents obesity or overweight.
